Synopsis
With no safe roads in north Iraq, masses throng Arbil airport Dozens of people massed at Arbil’s airport in a desperate bid to board flights to Baghdad, after a militant offensive in north Iraq wrenched vast swathes of territory out of the control of the government. The swift assault, which has seen jihadists led by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) capture several cities north of Baghdad, has effectively made key land routes connecting Baghdad and the Kurdish regional capital Arbil too dangerous for travel.
