CORONATION OF POPE PAUL A spectacle for the ages - the Coronation of Pope Paul VI - draws more than 250;000 people to St. Peter's Square. The rites that solemnize the elevation of Giovanni Cardinal Montini to the Chair of Peter are carried out with all of the traditional pomp and splendor of the Church. From the Vatican Palace the procession winds through the Square to an altar erected on the steps of St. Peter's. For the first time in a century the ceremonies are held out-of-doors. As dusk falls; the entire scene takes on an air of breath-taking beauty. The Pope celebrates a Pontifical Mass and then is crowned the triple tiara. He promises to carry on the work of Pope John XXIII.
